In the 1920s, my father lived among other Filipino bachelors who were all trying to form a community. Like most Filipino men during that time, they passed time by smoking, drinking, and gambling. This painting is based on an old photo that my father had taken of himself at a photo studio on Sutter Street in San Francisco.
